Scrumpy Select: Woodchuck Hard Cider Gumption

by | Mar 18, 2015

Hard cider in the United States has seen a few ups and downs on the popularity scale over the years, and while craft ciders are increasingly desired these days, apple-fermented drinks of all kinds were not as common a quarter of a century ago. Woodchuck Cider began producing the “Vermont Old Fashioned Cider” in 1991 and have seen the rises, falls and rises again of the industry. Evolving and growing over time, Woodchuck just announced the new hire of Ben E. Calvi (formerly of fellow Vermont cidery Champlain Orchards) as head cider maker who will lead the charge of the forward progression of production. With a toast to their new future and past, they are celebrating 24 years of hard cider making with the new Woodchuck Gumption, a bold and flirty concoction that tips the hat to spirited folks “with the gumption to follow their own path.”

Released earlier this month, the Gumption will remain on Woodchuck’s core cider list and make its draft debut in May. Crafted in Vermont, Gumption is a blend of juice from common eating apples and bittersweet cider apples. The cider has sweet, fresh apple up front that slides into a dry and juicy finish for an overall balanced and bold cider experience.
