Review: Hemly Cider Sloughhouse Jalapeño

By: Erin James

The Hemly family has been growing pears outside of Sacramento, California, for nearly 165 years. With six generations of farming experience, the family knows how to work the Bartlett pear, so turning it into a pear cider under the handle of Hemly Cider made sense. The base of its pear ciders is always that plus estate-grown Gala apples, which keeps the apple subtle and pear in the spotlight. Fermented and aged in oak, the jalapeño-laced Sloughhouse — titled for the farm where the family grows its peppers —  is a seasonal sip that is juicy at the core and fringed with heat. A harmonious spike of spice, this cider sings with a refreshing bowl of pico de gallo and fresh chips.
