Recipe: Maple Bourbon Cider Flip Cocktail

Both cider and whiskey have endured as two of the most noteworthy beverages in North American history. They each can trace lineages from early settlers and remain closely linked cousins today. For this cooler season, we’ve combined the kindred beverages here in this cider flip cocktail. 

Castle Hill Cider, built by President Thomas Jefferson’s mentor and guardian, Colonel Thomas Walker, has deep roots in American history. The Virginia is the only one in the world to ferment and age cider in buried terra cotta vessels (called qvevri). Serendipity is made from Albemarle (Newtown) Pippin apples, famously found in the orchards of Jefferson’s estate, Monticello, that add a tart green flavor. Slightly yeasty and acidic notes finish off this light and fresh-tasting cider. 

The “flip” is a classic cocktail category and dates back in usage to 1695. That historic relevance makes it a perfect template for cider and whiskey. What makes a flip a flip?  A whole, raw egg.  When shaken correctly, it tastes magically like egg nog, that classic wintry drink that everyone loves.  

Maple Bourbon Cider Flip  
Makes 1 cocktail 

1 ½ ounces bourbon  
1 organic whole raw egg 
1 ounce maple syrup 
3 ounces Castle Hill Cider Serendipity  
Garnish: freshly grated nutmeg 

Measure the bourbon, egg and maple syrup into a cocktail shaker. Fill the shaker with ice, cap and shake vigorously to incorporate the egg. Strain into an Old Fashioned glass and top with cider. Garnish with a dusting of freshly grated nutmeg.
