“This cider is lekker.” South African slang translation: “This cider is tasty.” More than a mantra, South African native Liz Kearns and her husband and business partner, Brendan, recently launched their cidery after this jargon-based philosophy in Calgary, Alberta. Battling quite a few legal and agricultural restraints in the province, Lekker Cider is bringing in fresh-pressed juice from the Pacific Northwest (mostly Washington State) and fermenting in the Canadian metro, a process that named one of its inaugural ciders.
The PNW Bru is dry from start to finish, with aromas of dried apples, baking spices, ale yeast and apple butter. The palate follows similar suit, with simple flavors of red apple and apricot, straightforward and easy-drinking, yet long and lingering in the dry-spiced apple finish.
