Uncle John’s Cider Mill is looking good for 97-years-old. The fruit house was established on the Beck family farm as a place to store and package the fruit before it hit the wholesale market. Still specializing in apples (along with the growth of peaches, cherries, strawberries and raspberries), the fruit house has grown to a packing facility, retail outlet, workshop, winery and hard cidery. With “Uncle” John Beck’s son, Mike, now running the show, the fruit house has morphed into a modern-day hard cider mill as Uncle John’s Hard Cider, producing a wide variety, from canned sessionable sippers to single-variety specialties and blends like the Russet. A combination of rough-skinned, “russeted” varieties including Golden Russet and Razor Russet, this dry and effervescent cider is ripe with apple flavors and an earthy, mineral-driven tone. The palate matches, with a fruit-forward yet tart and tannic finish to show that this uncle ain’t getting old any time soon.
