Scrumpy Select: Traditions Ciderworks 2011 Riverwood Orchard

The same guys who brought you Willamette Valley, Oregon’s 2 Towns Ciderhouse also produce a series of limited-vintage, handmade artisanal ciders under the name Traditions Ciderworks. These ciders, which act as a linchpin between Pacific Northwest cider styles and traditional Old World cider styles, include the Pinot Noir-barrel aged cider called Afton Field and the 19-percent ABV cider aged for one year in French oak barrels called Pommeau.

Their 2011 Riverwood Orchard is a brut cider made entirely from Jonagold apples off the namesake orchard in Monmouth, Oregon. The effervescent cider has a subtle fruit wine nose with floral aromatics and dry, juicy apple. The body is crisp and bright with lemon citrus and raspberry tones, sitting at medium weight on the palate, full in the mouth and leaving the slight presence of oak in the finish.
