When you ask the average American which European capital is at the top of their must-visit bucket list, Copenhagen is rarely the answer. It didn’t even make the top 10 for 2023, according to data compiled by the website travelpulse.com. That’s a shame, for the city is every bit as intriguing and cosmopolitan as London or Rome, abundantly filled with art, history, cool architecture and Michelin-starred restaurants. And for the slightly timid traveler, English is clearly the lingua franca, the common language for the many other European nationals attracted to this eminently livable city.
Unlike many European countries, Denmark does not seem to have a long history of cidermaking, though apples have been grown there for many centuries. Jeppe Gents, author of Cider I Europa (SuperG Press, 2018) and owner/cidermaker of Fejø Cider, thinks this might be because ripening fruit in Denmark’s cool northern climate was often a challenge and fresh apples would have been more highly sought after as a source of sweetness. That and Denmark’s long history of brewing would have made beer an easier go-to alcoholic tipple.
That has certainly changed, as in recent years Denmark has developed a growing, vibrant cider scene with cidermakers across the country taking maximum advantage of its abundance of fruit, including many unique Danish varieties. There is no better place to try many of Denmark’s best ciders than Copenhagen’s terrific cider bar, Holm Cider. Holm Cider opened in 2016 as both a bar and bottle shop. Visitors can try and buy not just innovative Danish ciders from producers like Aeblerov, Humlekaek and Meglø, but well-curated contemporary ciders from all over Europe including Sweden (Pomologik), Latvia (Abavas), France (Sassy) and Spain (Maeloc).
Located a little west of the old city center in the hiply cool neighborhood of Vesterbro, patrons can chill out with a glass and a nibble inside or out on the bar’s front patio. Staff members are happy to offer advice and tastes to help negotiate what will probably be unfamiliar cider territory. For the drinker who has not yet discovered the joys of cider, Holm Cider has a great selection of craft beers and wines as well.
As you make your summer vacation plans, keep Copenhagen in mind. You’ll be amply rewarded with outstanding cultural richness, great food and an amazing cider experience.
