The 2018 Chicago Cider Week starts today — each day is filled with cider-focused events sprawling across the city, leading up to Chicago Cider Summit on Feb. 17. Here are a few we recommend you attend.
Cider School | The Northman | February 12
Cider School is in session! Join Angry Orchard cidermaker Ryan Burke and Brian Rutzen, cider director at The Northman, for Apples and Ciders of the Hudson Valley. Light snacks and four ounces of cider will be provided for a fun discussion with the two cider pros as they go over everything from fermentation to unique barrel aging. Tickets to this event are $30, but The Northman is also hosting a party each night of Cider Week, with more details here.
How to Taste Apples | Fountainhead | February 13
Head to the Northman’s sister bar to learn the basics of how to taste cider, apple port and brandy with cidermaker Charles McGonegal of AeppelTreow Winery & Distillery. Attendees of this “Education Series” event will be guided through flights showing the versatility and range of the apple, through processes like fermentation, distillation and aging process. Tickets can be purchased here.
Ireland + UK Karaoke Competition | Harrigan’s Pub | February 15
Benefiting The Helen David Relief Fund, Harrigan’s hosts a selection of English and Irish ciders, with a side of karaoke. Entry is free and every dollar you spend that night go to the fund, so you can enjoy your cider knowing it goes to a worthy cause, even if you can’t carry a tune.
Chicago Cider Summit | Navy Pier | February 17
The sixth annual Cider Summit is returning to Chicago, featuring 150 regional and international favorites. General admission tickets are $35 and include 15 tasting tickets, a souvenir tasting glass and a donation to Heartland Alliance. Tickets are sold only online, and a sell-out is expected — get yours here.
Ciders & Sliders | Hopsmith Tavern | February 18
Close out the week of cider celebration with a hang over brunch at Hopsmith Tavern. The gentle dim lighting inside will help the headache. Ciders from Stem will be served and if you’re looking to delay the inevitable mimosas with the Real Dry and cocktails with Pear cider will be offered. A little grease is also in order, special brunch sliders will be available for order.
