5 North American Scrumpy Ciders

by | Jul 3, 2017

In its most basic definition, “scrumpy” is a rustic, unfiltered, farm-based cider, typically made from ripe, fallen apples. To “scrump” is to steal, snag or swipe up apples from an orchard, although the term is used in a less criminal way today. A classic from England’s West Country, these can be fantastic or horrific ciders, depending on which farm gate you knock on. Making their way from across the pond, the enthusiasm behind these farm-fresh scrumpy ciders is mirrored in North America. So much so, that a few producers are taking a crack at their own recipes — here are five to check out now.

Liberty Cider | Spokane Scrumpy Cider
This Spokane, Washington, ciderhouse is learning to appreciate the little things — like the backyard, roadside, under-appreciated apples that just so happen to make some of the best scrumpy-style cider. The unique flavor of the fruit is responsible for the taste of their Spokane Scrumpy, offering a light and refreshing sipper. Plus, you can sip and give back — the proceeds go towards Spokane’s Second Harvest food bank.

2 Towns Ciderhouse | Serious Scrump
If you’re serious about your scrumpy cider, then the imperial English-style cider from this Corvallis, Oregon, cidery is the latest sipper you need to get your hands on. Deep and rich, the apples blend together with traditional English cider yeast to create the sweet nectar of their scrumpy style cider.

JK’s Farmhouse Ciders | JK’s Scrumpy
Part of the Farmhouse Ciders orchards for 150 years, these organic, scrumpy apples are a family staple to the Michigan ciderhouse. An original recipe, the fresh, complex apples create a crispy and intriguing cider that is the ultimate companion for the warm summer days.

Big Hill Ciderworks | Summer Scrumpy
Set out to create summer in a can, this Pennsylvania cidery did just that with its Summer Scrumpy cider. A combination of sweet fruit and fresh acid, the apples give a tart flavor that is perfect for seasonal sipping. But don’t wait; this Big Hill cider is a seasonal favorite that is only available until September.

Merridale | Scrumpy Cider
The strong, distinctive taste of Merridale’s Scrumpy Cider isn’t just for cider lovers, but for scotch lovers too. Crabapples and tannic cider apples from the cidery’s native British Columbia are blended together to create this sipper, “aged to perfection.” If it tastes like gold, that’s because it is. This scrumptious sipper was voted one of the best during the North American Brewers Awards.
