Txotx! A Basque Ciderhouse Experience

May 22, 2016 @ 6:30 pm - 9:00 pm

What: The Smithsonian Folklife Festival, ANXO Cidery & Pintxos Bar, and the Washington, D.C. Basque Club are teaming up to create Txotx! A Basque Ciderhouse Experience. Following two sold out events in March and April, this third installment brings the food, cider, and cultural traditions of Basque Country to D.C. Guests can sample small bar bites from a traditional ciderhouse-style pintxo bar while enjoying a variety of Basque ciders. On the patio, guests will gather at the call of “Txotx!” (CHO-ch) to fill their cups straight from a cider barrel throughout the night. Meanwhile, Mercedes Mendive, from Elko, Nevada, a major center of the Basque community in the United States, will introduce Washington to the iconic piano accordion. Mercedes started studying the instrument at the age of ten, and will share a musical legacy shaped by generations of master Basque accordionists blending traditional staples with novel touches of the American West.

Txotx! A Basque Ciderhouse Experience is sure to whet your appetite for this summer’s Smithsonian Folklife Festival. Check out the Basque: Innovation by Culture program on the National Mall from June 29 to July 4 and July 7 to 10.

About the txotx tradition: From January through May, guests gather at ciderhouses throughout Basque Country for an annual ritual celebrating two vital components of Basque culture: food and cider. Guests eat their way through the night while eagerly awaiting the main attraction: the hazy, tart, and rustic cider unique to Basque Country. The call of “Txotx!” signals that cider will begin streaming out of massive chestnut barrels filled with the first cider of the season. Guests line up one by one, and take turns filling their glasses by catching the fizzy stream of cider. The txotx is repeated throughout the night – for a quintessentially Basque experience.
