Scrumpy Select: Averill Farm Hard Cider

Apple orchards are some of the few agricultural endeavors in North America that can count multiple generations in their tenured histories. Washington Depot, Connecticut-based Averill Farm is one of the oldest, continuously functioning family owned-and-operated farms in the country, since the Averills first purchased it from Chief Waramaug of the Potatuck tribe in 1746. Today, ninth generation family member Sam Averill and his wife, Susan, and son, Tyson, run the 260-acre property, with 30 acres of that hosting apples and pears.
Considering the more than 100 varieties grown between the two fruit, Tyson Averill recently released took the reigns at the cidery and produced a hard version to stand amongst their you-pick selections, cider donuts and fresh apple cider. Simply titled the Averill Farm Hard Cider, this cider speaks of the land it comes from, with farm funk, pure apple and citrus zest, finishing tart and refreshing on the palate.
